Tom was born and raised in the fine state of Georgia. While in high school, he inherited a five-string banjo from his uncle, Niles Puckett, and plunked upon it occasionally and haphazardly until discovering the music of Bela Fleck in 1997. He subsequently became interested in bluegrass and folk music and began playing Scruggs style banjo. After moving to Athens in 1998, Tom began playing music with high school friends Michael and Josh, eventually forming the Packway Handle Band.
Tom plays a Deering Deluxe banjo and uses GHS strings. |
